How can I make my Apple Mail only download unread emails?

I'm using pop3 to download my hotmail but it downloads all the ones i've already read at work. Can I set it only to download the unread messages?
 
The trade off is that you will NOT be able to access these messages from any other machine, as the only copy will be on you work machine.

If you are looking for read/unread syncing between your Work machine and your home machine, you want to use either MobileMe Syncing, or IMAP (email stored on your Mail server) instead of POP.

im also finding with pop3 that it sometimes doesnt receive the emails and there are some there. can this be fixed?
