How do I record short DVD video clips?

Is there a way I can record short (1-2 min) video clips from a DVD running on my MacBook Pro? I've looked for a "record" function in DVD Player, VLC, and Handbrake but could not find one. This is slightly important as I hope to use video clips in a course I am teaching. Many thanks for any help!

If you're talking about commercial DVDs (like a movie DVD you purchased), then no. What you're talking about doing is deemed illegal by the MPAA (at least in the United States).

If it's a non-copy protected DVD or a DVD that you made, though, then yes -- you can use software such as iSquint, Visual Hub or Handbrake to "rip" the DVD to some kind of movie file, then edit the file down to short clips with Quicktime Pro or iMovie.
