How do you partition a hard drive?

I have an old 400MHz g4 tower with a 10G HD and now have an external 160G. that 10G drive is practically full of apps and everytime i do a software update it takes forever for it to optimize. i assume that this is because of disk fragmentation. anyways, should I move my main system and app folders over to the large external? and how?

thanks

OSX does defragging on the fly. How much of the 10GB is used? Don't partition. Get Carbon Copy Cloner and make the external bootable and then clean the main HD out of everything you really, really don't need.

cool, so i can clone and move to external and then wipeout everything or ignore from the old drive? it will know to boot from the new location automatically? thanks!

Well, you'll have to tell it to boot from the external disk by launching System Preferences, then choosing the external hard drive in the Startup Disk pane of the System Preferences. But other than that, it's a painless process!
