How do you turn off the telephone function

I'm going abroad soon and want to avoid roaming charges completely (I understand that even if you don't accept a call you are charged for it!). Is there a way to keep the iPhone on, but the telephone function off? Would appreciate any advice on this.
Thank you.

Flight mode would do that.

If you have the phone with you, but don't answer the calls, and don't have the calls set to go to voicemail either, you shouldn't be charged with the calls you didn't reply to.
Some greedy phone operators charge even for "roaming" your text messages.

Thanks for your response Giaguara. AT&T's customer service rep told me that I would be charged whether the call was responded to or not. I know where the Flight Mode setting is.....but not what it is. What does the phone do.....or not do.....in Flight Mode? Why not just turn it off?

"Airplane Mode" turns off all wireless communications on the iPhone completely. No 3G, no wi-fi, no bluetooth.

You can turn on and off Airplane Mode in the iPhone settings -- first option, at the top.

You'll be able to tell if Airplane Mode is on or off by either the presence or absence of a little, orange airplane-shaped icon at the very top of your phone's screen, next to the battery meter.

When you first turn on Airplane Mode, your wi-fi connection will be disabled. You can re-enable the wi-fi connection only (so you don't have to worry about airtime charges) by visiting the "Wi-Fi" settings and turning wi-fi back on... that way, you can connect to 802.11 wireless access points and hotspots, but not the 3G, EDGE, or CDMA network.

Thank you elDiablo for your very helpful information. That sounds exactly like what I need......the ability to pick up e-mail for free, but not pay for phone calls, accepted or not.
Best,
Doris
