As many as you want.

Although, it'd get quite cluttered if you put too many in there.

I heard 256 maximum when OSX was first released. Anybody ever test this? My iMac gets a little crowded after 25 or so.

I saw a screenshot of someone with a cinema display, his dock was about 1/4 inch high and as wide as the screen.

IMHO that's just nuts...

Alright, I think we need to perform an experiment... someone who owns one of those ultra-wide, ultra-huge Apple Cinema displays needs to set it to its highest native resolution, and load up their dock to the gills with every single icon they can find. And then take a screen shot of it and post it here.
