I desperately want a new G5 but don't want to pay Apple prices for
additional RAM chips & hard drives !!

1. what are your opinions about which RAM to install (instead of the Apple RAM)
Kingston maybe ?? ($185 instead of Apple's $500) is there a better brand
than Kingston..? any GUESSES as to what Apple uses ? I know they don't
disclose the brand name ?

2. does someone know which brand of hard drive Apple uses for the 250 GB
ATA drive ??? any suggestions for which brand to buy in place of the
Apple brand ?

THIS SITE has average prices. If I were getting a G5, I would not get the additional Apple memory (no option for $500, what memory amount is that?) AND i would go to a reputable supplier (Kngston is good) and get two pairs of 512MB, if you need to add a substantial amount of memory. The site I mentioned has pairs for 512 MB for $180, so you can add 2 GB for about $360. Compare with 1 pair of 1GB for over $650 form the same site. 1 GB sticks remain substantially higher than 512MB.
As bobw pointed out, there's many choices for hard drives, just go with what you need (serial-ATA), and compare prices carefully.

Crucial has pretty decent ram for the price...Kingston ram isn't bad either. I'd just stay away from IBM harddrives ;) I'm still not over the 75GXP issue. Get yourself a seagate or a western digital :)

I believe Apple uses Maxtor SATA hard drives in the G5s, however, I'm a long-time fan of Western Digital. I've NEVER had a Western Digital go bad on me.

I'm a long-time fan of (fill in with your fav hard drive). I've NEVER had a (fill-in with fav hard drive) go bad on me. Each long-time computer user has a share of tales about hard drive failures, but I will never go back to Quantum ::ha:: or Micropolis, either.

Agreed on the IBM drives. I've got two stuck in my G4. Every year or so I have to do some scrambling to avoid data loss, then reformat one or both of them.

Anyway...are you a student or do you know anyone in education? I haven't seen the discounts Apple gives on G5's for edu, but when I was in college I saved a few hundred at one point.

Yeah, if you're not currently in school, take a course like programming or something stupid at your local public-friendly university and get an educational discount.

And I'd avoid La Cie drives, as long as we're sharing.
