How to back up my Mac

This is a desktop iMac OS X Version 10. 5. 2. It has a Time Machine, and I understand that some sort of extra hard drive is needed. Apple store wants to sell a rather expensive item. Would appreciate knowing what my sensible choices are, that would be safe and workable for a novice in Macworld.

You could use any Firewire/USB external with Time Machine. I use hard drives from OWC (Other World computing). Firewire 800 will be the fastest and OWC includes all the cables you need (one cable for each port on the device you buy).
