Hi,
I have a blue and white g3 and i need to be able to burn cds on a usb cd drive. roxio toast 5 won't detect the cd drive.

Thanks.

Make sure you have the most updated cd driver. Make sure Roxio Toast 5 works with your kind of cd drive.

remember that burning, if you get it to work, is going to be VERY slow and buggy. Make sure you have it create a test file first, and only burn from your computer's hard drive. Burn at 1 or 2x speed only.

it's a memorex 52x32x52x usb 2.0 drive. i can read cd's just fine. i found a FAQ stating that i should disable the USB/Firewire authoring support in the extensions, and enable all the toast extensions. i did that and i'm still having trouble.

Unless you have a USB 2 card installed in your G3, you're probably not going to be able to use the burner drive unless that drive can operate with USB 1.0. USB 2 is the faster version of 1…

have you installed all the software that came with the drive?
also remember, usb was kinda new to the mac at that time, and is kinda buggy. just because it can read, doesn't mean that it will write. have you gone to os x and tryed it there? you do have os x, right?

Just a note - you will not be able to use USB 2.0 with OS 9, which has no support for that faster USB. Reading CDs is no indication that burning can work. Even if you can use burning, you will be restricted to a maximum of 4X, and more likely 2X, despite the capabilities of your burner. Even that could be unreliable. toast 5 hasn't been updated for a couple of years, so your newer burner is probably not supported even with Toast. Best bet is to upgrade to Panther, or take this burner back, and see if you can trade it for a FireWire burner (a much better choice than USB for OS 9)
