how to read mac os .doc in windows

i have some .doc file, created in mac os. how to read them in windows xp (service pack 2) ??

please anyone refer any software or any way.

Word docs have been cross-platform compatible for years. What versions of Word are you using on the Mac and on Windows?
 
i'm using ms word 2003 in win xp. don't know about the mac version, someone else has provided me the documents.

If the person is using a version of Word older than 2001 (I think), maybe you won't be able to read it, but that still sounds unlikely. I assume since you prefaced your question by stating that they're .doc files that they actually have .doc extensions, right?
 
Do they all have Word document icons in Windows? If not, for the latter you should add the extension to the file name and see if it's openable. Also, try opening the files from the Word open dialog as opposed to opening them from their present location.
 
they have the icon for files, not the word doc icon. they are openable by ms word, but not readable.

tried to change into .txt .rtf, .pdf etc and sometimes a msg appears that the encoding is not correct while opening. if it opens, then it is not in readable format.

What, exactly, does this mean? You can open them, but you can't read them? Or you can read them but not open them?

Please describe exactly what you're seeing, including any error messages you get verbatim.
 
i can open them but can't read them(.doc/ .rtf/ .txt). there appears all unrecognizable characters.

changing the ext to .pdf results

From where do these .DOC files originate? Did someone email them to you?

It would be quite helpful in troubleshooting to know where these came from. Opening them may be as easy as simply contacting whomever they originated from and asking them with which program those files were created.

You can also try OpenOffice (a free, robust Microsoft Office alternative), available from www.openoffice.org. It can read and write a ton of word processing file formats.
 
actually a windows user copied them from a mac user. i'll try to contact with them.
