HP Printer Problem

I think this is the correct forum to ask this...

I have an HP Photosmart c3150 all-in-one printer that I am trying to get to work with my white g3 laptop (running system 10.4.11).

I have downloaded the appropriate drivers and all however the printer won't print any black ink. It prints color fine, and it scans fine, it just won't print with the black ink cartridge. When printing text (all black) it goes through the motions of printing but he page is blank when it comes out. I can print in color, and it prints fine (but with the obvious lack of black tones).

I also tried to print using a Canon pixma ip 1500 printer and the exact same thing happened. No black ink. Both printers have black full black ink cartridges.

Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks!

How do you know that you don't have a bad ink cartridge?

The same problem occurs on two different printers (Canon 1p 1500 and HP Photosmart c3150).

The cartridges are essentially new (and show full when you check levels).

Under PAPER TYPE QUALITY, when I change the PAPER TYPE to Normal and change the COLOR to Color Sync Tri Color Black, then the blacks print as light gray (probably from the color ink cartridge?).

When I don't do this, or chose some other option, only the text that's in color will print.

The only reason that I can think - two different printers, different manufacturers, and certainly different drivers - is the black cartridges. Something is wrong, and the same something. They must be improperly installed, or still have the factory seal on the cartridge.
The black ink is still full maybe because it's still sealed, and no ink can come out.
Or, are the cartridges really cheap generic replacements, and both bad?
Is there another possibility with two completely different printers with the same 'no black' problem?
Love to hear what you find out...
