Huge problem when installed 10.3

Huge problem after I installed Panther. I think something failed with the third disc.

Finder would not register, but the boot up process was the same. Finder kept blinking in the dock and a mouseover gave me brief attempts to reload. Safari is the only thing that will stay open, oh and iChat. Sys Prefs, Mail, DockFun, iTunes, etc start to load and then give me the unexpextedly quit error.

What should I do? Should I reload Panther starting from disc one?
 
Hmmm, I didn't even use disc 3 when i installed, only till recently did I look to see what on that disc, which slips my mind at the moment. As usual, the normal routine when problems arise, permissions, disk check. Was it a clean install? Or did you save your old preferences and stuff?
 
X11 is on the 3rd disk. Some of the additional print drivers (like the 2nd set of Epson drivers) may also be on there, but I'm not completely sure about that.

It is quite possible to get a corrupted install -- that's one of the flaws with Apple's installer program -- it doesn't check (checksum?) the package for damage before installing it, apparently.

My first clean install of Panther was corrupted and I had to reinstall. It seems that, at least for me with 10.3 and 10.2 when it came out, that certain combinations of installs work better/worse than others. One time I couldn't get Jaguar to install with all the printer drivers de-selected. The installer would just hang time after time. This happened after many attempts, and I finally settled on installing the default set without modifying which packages to install -- that went off without a hitch.
 
If I do an archived install, will it copy the pphoto and movie directories elsewhere, or will it be wiped out?

I am unable to back them up because Toast won't stay open longer than 5 seconds. The finder and desktop icons keep flashing in the background. Luckily, Safari eventually stays open and allows me to browse.
 
it keeps your entire user directory, and it will save other things to a folder called "Previous System" in the root directory.
 
The only things it will move, I believe, are your Sysem and Library folders and the applications that come with OS X, if you haven't moved them.
 
Found out that DockFun! app was killing my Panther Finder. I removed that from startup and all is well, almost....

I still have no clock up in the bar and all my icons restored to system default, no biggie.
 
Rename your preferences as well to something like *.old. This may help solve some other problems. Fix permissions. Perhaps run fsck -y. Usual stuff.
