IBM prototype chip thingy

So they'll put the Power5 (a.k.a. the PPC 990, I believe) in the Xserves with single- and dual-processor 2.2 Ghz models, making the Xserve much better than any Pentium X-based crap Intel could spit out.

Heh. Maybe... the power5 needs to be in servers (and desktops... PLEESE!!!)

And this may not belong here but is it possible to get a name change here? Mac Hacker is setting a bad rep....

Malexgreen, I believe your prediction is premature. Most likely we will have 970's in xServes by the end of this year, or early 04, but we wont have 990's in xServes until early 05 at best. I do hope they hurry though.

The real windfall will be when IBM & Apple can fit a chip into the Powerbooks and iBooks.

Mac Hacker, ask EdX. They gave us users a Christmas present, or something, back in December of being able to change our screen names, and they may do it again. I missed it because I wasn't active at the time to ask for "arden" to be capitalized, but you never know...

Apple can already fit a G4 into an iBook, they just choose not to in order to give the illusion of a consumer line. Especially now, the G4 is fine for consumer computers, but Apple can justify charging less for the iBook better with a G3. They could fit a G5 into it when they stick one into the Powerbook, but they won't to give the illusion of it being a consumer computer, as opposed to a professional computer.

It would be like putting a V8 into a Ford Escort. Sure, you could do it, but a consumer car like an Escort doesn't need a V8 engine, even if the cost wouldn't go up significantly (though in that case, it probably would).

I am sure that Apple Xserve will offer U2 or U4 with optionals of dual and quad of Power5 rather than buy many U1 xServe rackmount..

Speaking of prototypes. I have several times red that Apple does prototypes. These are prerelease computers sold to developers and important business partners. Before the launch of the Pentium 4 I was aware of available prototypes by Hp (4000 computers) and registered a printer to get this confirmed by email. What I know is that the Prescott will be released and that prototypecomputers aren't a completely free lunch even if they are made by :).
BTW: If Vivendi screw basic artists like me on www.mp3/magicmusic.com
:) iTunes can even grow.

Wow, you totally bungled that URL! Did you even click on it? Hilarious!

Of course Apple makes prototypes. Everyone makes prototypes for every product out there to narrow down the glitches and have a working model. What's the Prescott, though?

I believe that the Power4 (and eventualy 5) are priced WAY outside of the price that most Mac users will be willing to pay for a processor. If you think the G4 and the G5 are expensive, look at the prices of the Power lineup.

I found this link on IBM's intranet site. Sounds like it might be quite a good step forward in a year from now, but as the article says, it is "well into the middle" of its testing cycle.

oh man, why can't the two be in sync. we have the G5 based on the Power4 and next we'll have teh G6 based on the Power5.. holy confusing batman

The fact that they can boot OS's is a big step in validating a new CPU and chipset. After that, there's not a whole lot of validation at the system level to be done, IMHO before you can sell systems.

What is the major difference between the 970 Core and the Power4 Core? Isn't the 970 just a stripped down Power4, or a single core implementation??? Any links to this info would be helpful.

Depending on the difference between a hypothetical 980->Power5 core, it's highly likely they could have something by Q2'04? Or they may just go with the Power5 platform and copy it directly for Enterprise XServe.

As for 970 XServes, I'm confident they'll have those by Q1 04. If not then G5 may canibalize the XServe market for those who want performance.
