iBook 5.5GB: Upgrade internal or get USB external?

My iBook's hard disk, 5.5 GB, is just not big enough. I have all the Fink packages I want installed, and a few light application (I can't even install Office X because of space, relegated to AppleWorks), and I only have 700 MB free.

I was wondering, from your combined experience, if I should upgrade my iBook's internal hard disk, or shell out some cash for a USB external hard disk.

Given that it's only 366 MHz with a 66 MHz bus, I'm not that worried about the hard disk's speed, the whole system is slow to begin with :p

I'm leaning toward upgrading the internal HD, but I've heard a few horror stories (dead keyboards, busted ram, etc).

Thanks!

Firewire would be better, faster and more expensive.

I would upgrade the internal hard drive if I were you, but if this machine is the only one you've got and if you'd be screwed if something went wrong with it, I wouldn't attempt it. You'd be surprised how much better it is carrying around an iBook with a LARGE internal hard drive rather than the iBook, external hard drive and all the necessary cabling.

Not to mention the fact that it's pretty hard to power an external HD when you're not by a power outlet :) Also a USB 1.x drive would be __slow__.
