iBook CD/DVD Drive/Burner Not Loading

iBook 500 MHz (Aug '01)

CD/DVD Combo (Tray Loading) drive is not operating correctly.

I install a disc and it makes the normal initial noise, but does not load.

No sign of anything on the desktop.

Tried various CD's, but no success.

Any ideas?
 
I am operating 10.2.8

I tried personal data CD's with Photos.
I tried an Apple "Factory" CD
I tried some other Professionally made CD's

I didn't try a blank one, but suppose that if I had it would not have worked.
 
Sorry, but I have to ask this: did you open a finder window and check, if the CD was mounted? Or did you open the Disk Utility to see, if there is a mounted voume?
Last but not least, welcome to the forum. :)
 
Regarding a finder window and Disk Utility, I tried both. I had no success finding a mounted volume.

The sound my drive makes is the first second of initial startup and then it stops.

It sounds like it is trying, but something is stopping it.

Hoping it isn't something costly....ha ah
