ibook G3 freezes during start up

Hi
I have an ibook G3 running OS X 10.3. I got this from a friend, so I do not have any of the installation discs (I do have 10.4 installation discs however for another mac).

I ran the "software update" from my mac, but the "Mac OS X update" failed and my mac froze, so I had to do a force shutdown. Since then I have been upable to start up my ibook. The system begins to boot, but my screen gets stuck on the blue loading bar, and just hangs. I have left it for over an hour, but it still hangs. I rebooted, but the same thing happens.

Does anyone know what is wrong (and has any suggestions to fix it?)
Please help!!
Thanks

You can try to use the other install disk and run Disk Utility. You can try to repair the disk and permissions while booted from the install disk. This may however not work. From what I have read other people have had the same problem. You may need to prepare yourself for a reinstall. Before that give this a try.

Go to the friend and bring along you Mac and a Firewire cable. You can use his Mac to fix it if you boot your Mac into FireWire target disk mode. Once you can do that follow these steps:

1) Boot the sick Mac into FireWire target disk mode and connect it to the good Mac.

2) Once the FireWire mode mounts on the good Mac run all the Disk Utility routines on the sick Mac.

3) Then install the the 10.3.9 Combo Update from the friend's Mac, while your Mac is still in FireWire target disk mode, and run it on the sick Mac.

4) Boot your Mac normal now and cross your fingers.

I believed that 10.3.x is the fastest OS X you could run on that G3. Good luck.
