ibook M2453 only shows flashing question mark and face??

Hi:
Have this older clamshell M2453 ibook. When I power it up, I only get a question mark and a mac face flashing on the screen. It flashes back and forth between the two and then shuts off after a few minutes.
I did the apple logo/option/O-F procedure but get same results.
I also tried at prompt reset-nvram and reset-all etc...

Any ideas?

It means that the computer cannot find a device to boot from -- is there an operating system installed on the internal hard drive?

If so, try holding down the option key while booting -- this will bring up a menu allowing you to select from different bootable partitions on all devices. If an operating system is installed on the hard drive and is in bootable condition, it will appear on that screen.
