iBook: odd clicking noise?

Hey all, I'm new here, so bear with me if I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to tech support.

Anyways, I'm running a 14' iBook that's about a year and a half old. Recently, I've noticed that if I keep it on too long, I'll hear an odd clicking noise come from the left of the trackpad, which usually comes with a little bit of lag on the computer.

If that wasn't worrying enough, my iBook has a history of kernel panics(it breezed through two logic boards already), and when I started it up this morning, it made that ominous fan noise that I've come to associate with panics.

Can anyone shed any light on what's going on? I still need to run the hardware tests, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be interested to hear.

EDIT: I am running 10.3.9

Just before my PB's hard drive bit the dust recently, it made a metallic, rythmical sound, sort of like the "tock" of a pendulum clock.
You might want to do a backup of your HD immediately.
My PB's HD also failed after a year and a half of use, and the "tocking" emanated from just to the left of the track pad, where the HD is located.

Same message again:
My HD made clicking sounds before it left me.

Don't wait, and backup now, and look for a replacement drive.
(my iPod saved me when fate hit my internal drive. And there wasn't much time…)

ive got this sound too, and had some trouble with my hard drive. i think (but i could definitely be wrong) that its an I/O issue.

BACKUP YOUR FILES NOW!!!! YOUR DRIVE IS ON THE VERGE OF A PHYSICAL FAILURE THAT ISN'T REPAIRABLE!!

PLEASE do this before it's too late.
