Icon on desktop for nonexistent drive

I have an external drive I use for backups.
There were two icons for the drive on my desktop with the same name.
I used Disk Utility to erase, zero, and rename the drive.
Then cloned my startup disk to it.
There are now two icons for the drive on the desktop: one with the old name and one with the new.
Opening the old-name shows there is nothing on "it."
Opening the new-name shows the files cloned from startup disk.
I have tried to get rid of the drive alias in /Volumes via terminal using "sudo rmdir drivename", but was told that it was "busy." (Note: I not a skilled user of unix commands--it was suggested to me to try this by someone else.)

Is this a symptom of something more serious?
How can I get rid of the bogus drive icon?

Did you at one time partition that drive? It sure sounds like the drive is in two partitions.
