iDVD 5.0.1 keep crashes - never burn a project!

Hi,

I try to burn or save as an image with iDVD but the application crashes allthe time. I preview my project, all fine, but when it comes to burn or save the application closes and the window to report the program or reopen appears.

I have tried to unistall and install again iDVD (removing the .plist file) but nothing, get the same error.
I tried to do the easter egg as i have an external DVD-R (LG 8x DL), i get the secret window (press ctrl and burn sign) but it crashes again!

Even if i disconnect my external drive, reboot and try to save as an image still crashes!

Any ideas?

I work on a mini mac, 1.42, 512Mb, 80Gb, ATI 9200.

Hello!

In your iDVD project, are you by chance using files from CD's or DVD's? If so, they need to be in the drive in order to either Burn or Save As a project. Also, Trashing the dvd.plist file won't UNinstall iDVD. You would have to reinstall iDVD from the installation CD or DVD that came with your Mac. Try also Repairing Permissions using Disk Utility which can be found in Macintosh HD>Applications>Library>Utilties. Repairing Permissions can solve many a problem.
And using a program like MacJanitor or Onyx which can be found at www.versiontracker.com can help also. They are both freeware. :)

Dear Mac Users!

I am about to have a nervous breakdown with iDVD. I ve tried everything (as far as I know), that means:

Completely unistall iDVD (removing all files of it - .app, .plist, themes, etc)
Reinstalling it from original Tiger DVD
Fixing/Verifying permissions with disk uytility
Maintenance with Onyx and MacJanitor (great apps btw)

Dah dah dah!

When i try to save as an image or burn it crashes :(

I do have all my material (images and videos) stored in HD.

Any other Suggestions??? Am afraid it might be the memory (compatibility???)...argh!

My only guess are it might be the wrong speed media (DVD-R), a bad batch of DVD-Rs, the DVD writer may need cleaning. These are only guesses.
 
It is not the media or the DVD because the program crashes even when i try to save on the HD as an image!

Thinking of formatting my tifer :(

I'm really confused. I am positive you cannot reinstall iDVD from the Tiger installation disk. You can however, purchase iLife 05 and install it from that DVD. And after reading several posts above, I think that I agree with "Satcomer" the person who suggested that maybe your DVD media might be the problem. You've certainly tried everything else.

I do can install iDVD from Tiger DVD, it comes on mac mini with iLife bundled! Its an original DVD of Apple - Mac Mini!

I do not think its is my media as I got the crash even when i try to save my project as an image on HD. So there is no use of DVD media at that operation.

I came to a conclusion that might be a fault in Memory (TwinMos 512mb) or i do have to format my tiger :(
 
Problem Solved!

I am from Greece and had localized my Mac Mini in the International Options Panel. Putting it back on default (English) the iDVD worked just fine.

If it is not too late to help...

I have been researching this issue online (as I too have the problem). Here are the online suggestions.
1. Delete your iDVD plist (preference) file com.apple.iDVD.plist (the actual folder location has changed over time - but look for the file by name)
2. Make sure you have lots of free space (20GB recommended) on the startup drive.
3. Try using "Save as Disk Image", this burns to hard drive rather than the DVD disk. If that works, then burn the image with Disk Utility onto the DVD. This makes duplicate burning even faster and does not waste a DVD

To Burn a disk image to a DVD using Disk Utility (OS 10.3.x):
3a. Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
3b. Drag the disk image you created from iDVD to use to the Disk Utility window if the disk image doesn't appear in the list.
3c. Select the disk image (in Disk Utility) and click Burn.
3d. Insert a CD or DVD disc into the optical drive of your computer and follow the prompts.

4. Several people recommended changing type of DVD disk. Different brands and even different speeds (use 4x disks if the burner is a 4x burner)

Let me know if any of these are the key. I was able to finish my 10 disc burn by restarting but each burn was only 1.5 hours. It would be nice to know the actual solution. I like the burn to disk option in general, and this is an official feature on iDVD 5. There is an Easter Egg method to enable this function in older versions of iDVD at http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/mac_support/ (Jeff's Mac Support Website). This site contained most of the information I summarized above.
