iDVD Not Reading DVD-R

Hello everyone...I found this site and I hope some of you OSX guru's can help me. My problem is this, I am trying to burn a slideshow on to a DVD for the first time. (I have had this G4 for almost 3 years). Anyway, I will set everything up to where I want to burn, then it asks me to insert a DVD-R. I insert the blank disc and it says "waiting for device to become ready". Then it spits out my disc saying "There was no disc found in drive, Please insert disc". Am I doing something wrong here??

Thanks in advance for your help.

What kind of Mac do you have? What system software are you running? What kind of DVD-R media are you using (brand and speed)? What version of iDVD are you trying to burn the disk with? Does the drive read DVDs ok?

1. Power Mac G4
2. OSX 10.2.8
3. Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB (Couldn't Find Speed)
4. iDVD 2.1
5. "Does the drive read DVD's ok?" I don't understand the question.

Ok...I think I solved my own problem. I read on one of the posts here that iDVD will only burn on DVD-R not DVD+R.

But my next question is, how do I find out if my DVD burner is 4X or 8X burning speed?

Check the model number of the drive with Apple System Profiler, then look it up on the web (or post back here with the model number and someone else may know the speed).

Did that Memorex drive come with the computer, or did you install it yourself? Also, is it internal or external? iDVD doesn't work with external drives, if it is external.

When I asked "Does the drive read DVDs ok?" I wanted to know if you had any other problems with the drive -- like if you insert a movie DVD, does everything work correctly? Does the drive act ok with regular CDs and CD-Rs and CD-RWs, or is burning a DVD the only thing that's wrong with the drive?
