Imac G3 DV speakers not working

I have purchased an Imac 400mhz dv model (ex school i believe).
Everything working fine except the internal speakers.
The sound is working through the phone jack for headphones external speakers.

I have classic as well as OS 10.2 loaded.
In classic I have looked at sound control settings and find that the "speakers" tab is in faint colour so can not be looked at. Does this mean that the computer is not recognising its own speakers.

A friend has had a good look inside and thinks wires are okay, even tried some speakers from another imac that he knew to work and they did not work either.

Any ideas on settings etc that may have been turned off and how to turn them on would be appreciated. thanks John
 
When you bought the computer did you make a new account or just start using the account on that was already on the computer? I ask this because most schools turn off the speakers the students accounts so the class would not be interrupted.
 
I have updated user passwords when updating to system 10.2 on the computer.
Are you saying that the speakers can be turned off on through user account settings?
Or somewhere else?
 
Then open System Preferences-> Sound and look at the Output tab to make sure your speakers at noticed and not muted. If the settings look good in the Output tab, then go to the application /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup. In that application make sure to output Format is set to 44100.0 Hz.

Also try to reset your Pram. It may help, Good Luck.
 
Hi thanks for the continued ideas help.
Followed above instructions and find output tab shows built in audio as only option. Then in Audio/Midi setup on the Audio tab, output format is 44100.0 Hz
Both places mute is not checked so output should be on.
So still none the wiser, perhaps it is to do with sound on the board, but as stated headphone/external output works.
Any further ideas still welcome.
 
Hey! Did you ever get your audio fixed?

I bought an iMac G3 400 DV on ebay with no sound through speakers, but through the headphone jack. It hasn't arrived yet, but when it does, I'm going to replace the headphone board with the one from my iMac G3 400 DV SE. I read on applefritter.com about a guy with the same problem who fixed it by replacing the board. Now to find a reasonably priced replacement. welovemacs.com has them, but they are $50 for a "refurbished" headphone board ("refurbished" probably meaning "we removed it and blew the dust off"). This is more than I paid for the whole iMac!

Good luck! And let me know if you find a cheap source. I couldn't find any on ebay!
