iMac G3 Slot Loading not booting to OSX Panther Installation Disk

Hello,

I have a IMac G3 running Mac OS 8.6. I bought Mac OSX Panther from an apple retailer and have kind of run into a wall. I have rebooted the computer and tried using the "c" key to force it to boot from the cd but this did not work. I rebooted it again and tried using the option button this time and it brought up the advanced boot options menu. However this is where I have my problem. It shows both the hard drive and the disk but when I click on the disk and click the arrow to continue it just brings the advanced boot options menu back up and will not proceed with the installation. I have checked the hardware requirements and they are met. I just can't figure this out. I am relatively new to mac's but am really interested in learning about them. Also I would like to know if it would be possible to add another hard drive to this computer and install OSX on it rather than on top of 8.6. (I would prefer to keep both but if not the OSX is the way)

HELP.....PLEASE!!!

The firmware update will not prevent booting to the OS X installer, or installing OS X 10.3
However, if the firmware update has not been installed, you _will_ have problems when using OS X.
You have to update to OS 9.1 to install the firmware update, so if that iMac still has the original 8.6 installed, then likely the firmware update has ever been completed.
Also, those models shipped with 64 MB RAM as a base configuration. And, you can't boot to the 10.3 installer with only 64 MB installed.
So, to recap:
Firmware update requires upgrade to OS 9.1 to install that.
OS X 10.3 requires that firmware update.
OS X 10.3 installer requires 128 MB RAM installed.
An original hard drive might be only 6GB, so you could encounter space issues, requiring a larger hard drive.
