iMac G5 overheating and restarting problems...

Last week my PowerbookG4 officially died, so my mom gave me her first generation iMacG5 to take to school.

I am a much heavier computer user than my mom - she uses the computer to check her mail, and I am a full blown Graphic Design major. I was using Illustrator, as all of the sudden a very strong smell of burning plastic was eminating from the computer! NO!

I quickly shut down the computer for the night.

I woke up this morning and attempted to turn on the computer. It would get to the start up screen... then all the sudden just turn off! No noise, no warning, just as if someone had pulled the plug! I've restarted it several tmes today with the same results. Ocassionally I can see the desktop for all of 2 minutes, but then WOOF! It's gone!

I have already checked the power supply, tried to unplug unnecessary extras off of the computer, checked the four LED's in the system, and did a few things in single user mode. Everything looks normal.

Could this be part of the iMac g5 Repair Extension Program? (The serial number is a match.) What the heck is wrong with this computer?

This computer is my life. Please help!!!

If the serial number is a match, I would definitely take it in for this repair. Take advantage of it.

Yeah... but the website says that they won't take it for the REP in unless it shows the signs. I wonder if anyone knows if the problems I am having are similar the problems that they are recalling... or if they are a different matter all together?

Affected systems will exhibit one of the following video- or power-related symptoms:

Scrambled or distorted video
No video
No power
Note: If your iMac G5 is not experiencing any of these symptoms, you do not have to contact Apple or any Apple Authorized Service Provider.

I think your iMac is experiencing the No Power symptom. The symptom that you experience is pretty typical. Yes, it gets power, until you try to use it for something useful. Take it to a authorized service shop for a checkout. If you have the back open, you can look around for any bulging capacitors (the little cans). The tops should be completely flat, bad ones will be bulging, possibly leaking some brown goo.... Anyway, that means Apple should replace...
