hi

I have changed my iMac (last white version) memory from 2*512 to 1gb+2gb.

however now the iMac does not switch on and the on/off light blinks rapidly.

anyone know why this means?

Looks like it doesn't like the RAM. When the lights blink at startup it indicates usually something with the RAM. :(

Yes, 1 + 2 GB should be OK, assuming that the chips are good.
Take one chip out, and try to boot with just the one chip - you don't have to use memory in both slots.

tip - the memory is not easy to seat completely. It will seat with something like a 'snap'. If not, eject the memory, and try again.
If you get the system to boot with just one chip - try the second chip by itself.
If you get your Mac to boot with both chips singly, then should be OK with both.

Hi again,

Rest assured I did unplug the iMac prior to memory swap.
As per the make, I'll answer that next time I pull them out (they are in the iMac I am presently using)

I have tried the approach indicated and indeed the 1gb was not ok.

Now I have 2 good RAMs (still 1gb + 2gb) and have tested them singly and they work on both ports. Each time the profiler gives me 1gb or 2gb.

However, when both RAMs are installed, the profiler says 1gb!!!!

I am thinking that the profiler is not saying the truth. Is there any other way to know how much memory the system thinks it has?

Cheers

Try opening the System Profiler to see which slot is reporting. One theory is that they are different speeds, so only one is working. (but I'm not a memory expert)

There may be a problem with the dimm sizes. I know that my iMac that has the specs listed below will only accept up to 2 GB's of RAM (2x1GB DIMM's). I purchased one of the first Intel iMacs that came out. The Core 2 Duo's may take up to 4 GB but I know mine can only accept 2 GB total.

Hello,

So further to multiple tests with memory chips placed in bank0 or 1 in various combinations of 2gb and 1gb I obtained multiple results, 1gb, 2gb, silent iMac or flickering iMac light.

So brought the iMac to the shop and there... miracle 3gb! :o

So I take the iMac home and there ... 1gb!

Now the iMac will be sent back to apple for repairs.

However I can state that the "about this Mac" screen is only a first check, the "System profiler" Memory pane indicates which memory bank is working at any given moment. This permitted me to discover that it was not a faulty memory bank or memory chip set that was involved.

Thanks to all for the help
