Immediate wake after putting to sleep....

My iMac has an issue with waking immediately after I manually put it to sleep. I have searched around the internet for this problem and have seen a few topics about it. It looks to be a USB waking it up. I have had all USB devices unplugged for a few days, other than the keyboard (with the mouse plugged into the keyboard) and it still happens.

I also found an article about a file called the Autowake.plist and found I did not have that file, for some odd reason. It seemed to describe the exact symptoms I was having. SO I went through the instructions on how to create it, which was basically setting up in preferences, a time for the system to shutdown and startup. The file gets created, then I just change those settings back and the file stays.

This is a log report from the most recent occurrence.

Looks like some USB device is waking your system. What USB devices (including any hubs) do you have connected to your system?

Try removing all USB peripherals save for the keyboard and mouse and then try and do the sleep jig... does the computer wake immediately now? If not, then by process of elimination you can narrow down which specific USB device is causing the problem.

I've seen similar problems happen with a faulty Bluetooth card. Apparently the Bluetooth cards use USB internally (at least with Intel Mac Minis), so the errors in Console all say USB. Do you see any periodic error messages related to USB while the system is awake? The last time I saw the Bluetooth problem, I saw error messages popping up regularly while idle.

I had this in the original post..

"I have had all USB devices unplugged for a few days, other than the keyboard (with the mouse plugged into the keyboard) and it still happens."

I guess I could try a different mouse.

I'll have to check the logs to see.

I have the same problem with my G5. I've tried all of the suggestions listed with no change. It wakes up right after I put it to sleep even using the power button. It seems my internal modem is causing it to wake, but I don't have it selected in the PPP options. All that's selected is to connect with Ethernet. I'm using a DSL modem. How can I deactivate the internal USB modem?

Here's my log.

Here's another with earlier events. Seems my internal modem is changing from state "0" to state "1". How can I stop that?

All my applications were closed. My USB hub was disconnected. I also tried it with the DSL modem disconnected from the computer, and it still wakes immediately. Any ideas? Thanks!

I too have been going nuts experiencing the immediate wake following any attempt to put it to sleep. I took a look at my /var/log/system.log file and noticed entries of this form on every sleep attempt:

Some research via Google appeared to indicate that "wake event 0020" corresponds to keyboard activity. So I unplugged my Apple USB keyboard (leaving the mouse plugged in) and choose "Sleep" from the Apple menu. Voila!! The system entered a state of blissful sleep and stayed there!

Then I examined my keyboard carefully, and found that the top right key (* on the numeric keypad) was stuck in a down state. I popped it loose, reconnected the keyboard, and have experienced no further problems.

I'm not saying this will solve everybody's sleep troubles, but a careful check of the keyboard is certainly advised.
