Koelling

I Think Different
From Slashdot, I was hoping to get some real discussion started and avoid the throngs of people posting at /. Imposter. I like how it seems that it's Gateway, not Apple that is hanging on by their toenails and even the stock prices listed show how completely dead they are.

A guy I know just bought a Gateway.
He liked the low prices, and what it came with (shitty software, and crappy hardware).
I kept telling him "Don't buy a Gateway, Don't buy a Gateway.."

But he eventually bought one.

I tried to sell him an iMac when he was first looking at computers, but he didn't like it.
His first question was "where's the start menu?" - He was so "window-ised", the start menu was something he HAD to have..

I asked him what he was looking for in a computer
Take pictures with a digital camera.
Save movies from his camcorder.
Surf the net.
LCD monitor.
Scan photos and print them out.
Something his daughter could use.

I explained how the Mac could benefit him in each one of those... But he wouldn't budge.
The day he got his Gateway, he called me up to ask if I could help him set it up.
"Its all color coordinated.. but, theres so many wires.."

Booted it up, and got an error message.. saying it was missing a few drivers.
Then it ran through some set up, asking if we could hear sound. NO, couldn't hear sound.. So it then gave us some troubleshooting tips (are the cables connected? Are the speakers turned on? - Don't you love how Windows patronizes the user, into thinking they're so stupid they'd forget to turn them on.. Geez, it turned out we had to reinstall the drivers)
Then he started surfing around XP. His first comment was "I really don't like that start menu.."
:D - So, I helped the poor man out, and switched it back to classic view. It was my first time using XP, and I didn't like it.... From media player, to just the OS itself. UGHH.. I came home and got on my Mac, with its nice iTunes, and fluid designs. AHHH..

Anyways, the whole time I was there, wanted to tell him "You know, if you had bought that iMac...", but oh well. I didn't want to spoil his delight in using that inferior piece of crap.

Huh?

Gateway is terrible. Here's a list of problems with I had with msft's os.

Have any hardware problems (aside from the color coordinated cables) to justify your claim of crappy hardware?

Vanguard

Huh? Where's the list? Unless your referring to my post.
Which, I would have to say "HUH", to.

Anyways, can I just justify my claim? Aside from anyone who's ever purchased a Gateway saying they would NOT purchase another Gateway, No, I suppose I can't.
So, since you really don't know me, nor the people I know.. I guess that didn't justify for you, huh?

So was your friends Gateway one of those LCDs in the article? I'd really like to know whether they recklessly put the disk drive and cd drive sideways like Apple thought about, but realized that it slows both of them WAY down. That would be justification that Gateway makes crap hardware (not that there isn't a thousand other examples too). And if it is that one, how many cords could there possibly be on a all in one computer? One of my favorite lines was when it said that they released their other all in one in 1999 on the shirt tails of the original iMac but strangly, did not do well =-P
