Input/output Error When Partitioning New Hard Drive

Hi-

I put a larger size hard drive in an external Firewire case. When I boot the Mac it says to initialize the harddrive. I click OK and Disk Utility pops up. When I partition the hard drive, i get INPUT/OUTPUT ERROR

That's it, no other description. Any ideas or suggestions?

I tried a different hard drive and it worked. The only difference is the one that did not work was ultra ATA. Hopefully this helps someone else.
