Installing DVD recorder in Dual PowerMac G5

I'm new to the Mac, appreciate anyone's help...

I just got a dual PowerMac G5 (running OS X Tiger 10.4.3) but it doesn't have a SuperDrive (just has CD-ROM drive). I want to install a DVD recorder so I can use iMovie.

My question is: can I buy a PC IDE DVD recorder and install it (i.e., Pioneer DVR-610A/B, etc.) or must I buy an Apple SuperDrive to get this functionality?

Secondly, if I can use a standard PC IDE DVD recorder, do I have to worry about drivers, or will Mac OS X Tiger auto detect and install?

Thanks much,
John

Your G5 does have a DVD-R drive. Check the System Profiler. All G5's came with at least DVD-R drives.

Actually it doesn't, so my question remains...

What internal DVD recorders can I buy that OS X will recognize and use?

Just out of curiosity: how did you acquire a G5 that only has a CD-ROM drive? No G5 tower ever shipped from Apple that only had a CD-ROM drive...they had a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM combo at the least. Did you acquire the G5 second-hand or something where the original owner perhaps swapped out the DVD drive for a regular CD-ROM drive?

Just to follow up on bobw's suggestion -- if you're using Tiger and keep the system up-to-date (at least to 10.4.3), I can recommend the Pioneer DVR-109 drive as it will be natively supported without any kinds of hacks or patches -- simply install it, and the computer will recognize it immediately.
