Installing Fonts and Font Viewer Software

Can somebody tell me how to add new fonts in OS X? I tried dragging them to the fonts folder but it says I do not have write access even though I'm logged in as an admin.

Also, what is the best program to use for viewing fonts?

1) There are up to 6 different locations Mac OS X will look in for fonts. They are (in no particular order, and starting at root) System > Library > Fonts, Library > Fonts, Users > yourname > Library > Fonts, System Folder > Fonts (if you have Classic installed), Network > ? > Fonts (I don't know where network fonts appear, or what the path is to it, but they can appear there), and I forget the last one. So put fonts in the root Library folder if you want them accessible to everyone, or your user folder if you want them accessible only to yourself, or in your System Folder if you want them accessible in Classic programs (and they are compatible, not all are).

2) There are many different programs; you can find a number of them at Mac Mall. Panther also has Font Book, which is a basic utility. I suggest you read reviews of some of the programs or ask about specific ones, as some may work better for you than others.

arden,

Thanks for the reply. Whenever I try to move fonts from a different folder into "System > Library > Fonts", it says "The item "fontname" could not be moved because "Fonts" cannot be modified.

Can you tell me how I can make it so I can add fonts to this folder?

Thanks

You don't wanna put fonts there... you wanna put them in Users > (username) > Library > Fonts.

Then they'll be available to you.

If you enable Root, you'll be able to add fonts there, but doing this, you have access to anything in the system and could possibly screw things up if you not sure about doing something.

To enable root, open Netinfo Manager (in Utility folder) Under the Security Menu, Enable Root.

Thanks for the help.

Can I add groups of fonts in their own folders inside of the "Username/Library/Fonts" folder? Or, do the fonts have to be directly in the Fonts folder and not a sub-folder?

Not sure about that. Why not give it a try and let us know if it works. I would imagine it will.
