insufficient privileges

Hi. I am a new forum member and I apologise if this is a very basic question. I really have tried my best to locate an answer to it! I have a mac mini and have recently added the iomega HDD 750GB. I would like to move my itunes folder to this external drive and so I followed the instructions posted on how to do this. However when I tried to consolidate my itunes library(after changing itunes folder to external HDD) I get the 'you do not have enough access privileges for this operation' message. I am the sole user of this mac do not need to restrict access. I've been reading through forums for days now and am getting nowhere. All I want to do is add some music to my new hard drive for goodness sake! I even tried right clicking on the iomega HDD icon on the desktop\ get info\sharing & permissions\read &write(for everyone)\ apply to enclosed items. The 'applying user privileges to iomega HDD' striped bar comes up but after 2 days -yes 48hrs of leaving this to run I cancelled it. Am I doing something fundamentally wrong here? My pc was a pain in so many ways that I became a mac user but I'm starting to get a bit frustrated. Thank you so much for any help you can give.

This may seem like a silly question nuttyuser, but when you write that you changed the iTunes folder to the ext HD ... you don't mean you tried to move the iTunes folder from:

YourUserAccount ~> Music ~> iTunes

Or did you simply just create a new folder on the iomega HD then add your music to it ??

VirtualTracy- To change the itunes folder i clicked the following:
iTunes/preferences/advanced/change. Then I selected iomega HDD from the devices menu which appears and then I clicked open. The itunes music folder location on the advanced screen now shows iomega HDD:
Satcomer- iomega HDD/show info/format: Mac OS extended(journaled)
 
Hi nuttyuser, have a look in System Preferences ~> Accounts, to verify that your account is an Admin type. It will say below your user name.
 
Ok, let's get our hands dirty. Connect the iomega drive to your Mac. When the drive icon mounts on the Desktop, click it to open it. Highlight the parent folder containing all your music files.

Ctrl/Right Click the folder and select "Make Alias" from the contextual menu. Drag that alias from the Iomega drive window to your Music folder. Launch iTunes and try to add the alias folder using iTunes ~> File ~> Add To Library.

Let's see what happens ...
 
Am I looking for the parent folder with my music in iTunes or on iomega? Looking at my existing iTunes music folder on the Mac I've found there is more than one user sub folder. I have me,pcworld and shared. For example when I put a cd into the mac for some reason it saves to pcworld. Therefore I have nothing in my own iTunes music folder!? Should I just move the music folders from pcworld to my own user account? Can I eliminate pcworld from my Mac as I don't know why it's there. Just one account would be fine but I don't know how to do this.
Now, looking at iomega I also have a users folder and my account (but no pcworld thankfully), clicking here reveals another itunes music folder with a few albums in but if I ctrl/right click on the itunes music folder here or on any albums within the folder there is no "make alias" option. Sorry if this confusing everything but now you know why I'm called nuttyuser!
 
Lol ... Don't worry I recall all to easily the times when I would tear my hair out in frustration and then kick myself when I found the solution was actually quite simple!

What version of Mac OS X are you on nuttyuser? Also what version of iTunes?

Quit iTunes and launch it holding down the Option key. You will (hopefully) see the following:



Select New Library, name it and save it to the default location, your Music Directory.

Let me know when it's done.
 
Thanks for staying with me on this, I thought to myself, "VirtualTracy's probably fallen asleep or done a runner after all that waffle in my last post.
OS X 10.5.5
iTunes version 8.0
I have created,named and saved a new library to Music.
