intallation problem with 10.3.2

Ok, so I will freely admit I am a fairly new user. i have never updated an OS since I got my ibook. My question may be ridiculously simple and for that i apologise in advance.

Have a g3 ibook and am currently running v10.2.8. I have the installation disks to install v10.3.2.

Once inserting disk, I press the restart button when promted to and put in my password. once it has restarted the apple logo comes up on a silver/grey background.

This is all that happens.

Maybe I just have to be patient, but it seems that it spends an inordinately long time just sitting on this screen. I though I would wait but after 45 minutes of it just doing nothing I turned it off as I needed to use the computer for something else.

Is it supposed to take this long and if not what could be causing it? Thank you for your time, I realise it may be the simplest thing you have to answer today :)

It's not supposed to taker that long.
It could be RAM related as one quess. If you have installed extra RAM, remove that for the time of installation.

Or while booting the system, hold down 'alt' key and select the OS X Install that way - it could be faster.

Inserting the CD is good, restarting the machine too - but after you hear the startup chime you have to PRESS THE "C" KEY on your keyboard so the computer will actually start from the CD-ROM! (Keep the key pressed until you can actually see the OS starting from the CD, then release the key.)

If you need any more help, please post it here & I'll gladly give you more assistance.

Well, i hate to say it but it didnt work - i dont think.

I held down the C key (i had seen this recommended before in another thread) after the chime. This resulted in the screen going grey (ie - without the apple logo in the middle). I held it down for a good five minutes. It made the CD drive whirr quite a lot and loudly and ...

nothing happened :(

oh and no i haven't added any RAM

What do the 10.3.2 CDs look like? Are they retail versions (black in color), or are they machine-specific versions (grey in color)? If grey, they must be specific to your G3 iBook -- grey-colored, machine-specific disks from a different computer will not work with your iBook.

They are white with a thin red border and black writing. I got them at the mac store in town when I had the logic board replaced. What I mean by that was, I needed to have the logic board replaced. They did it. And gave me the CD's saying heres a newer OS. So I didn't pay for them, but I would assume they would give me the right ones.

Hmm...sounds like they made a copy of OS X, and probably not from the actual install discs either. The official install discs had a black background with a silver gradient "X" across the disc.

What it could also be is the hardware test CD that Apple sometimes ships with its machines so that you can use it to detect any hardwre issues you might have with your Mac.

well, there are 3 cds all with apple logo, copywrite, version, all rightsreserved etc etc printed on them. They don't look copied. I dont know if me being in new zealand means we have different looking disks though.

maybe someone from new zealand will know if mine look authentic.

downloading 10.3.4 seemed like a good idea - from the apple site and all - but of course i need 10.3 or higher (would have been nice if they had told me that before i downloaded it...

not sure what you mean about the hardware test cd - when i insert the cd it certainly says it is the correct cd (disk one of 10.3.2)

Thanks for your help though. guess im doomed not to ever upgrade. poor me.

on a side (possibly related) note. being a fairly new user and all - what the best way to speed up my ibook a little? start up itself does seem a little slow. Although turning it off for a while (long while) seems to correct this for a short time.

Thanks again anyways.
