Internet Dongles - Good or Bad?

My neighbour has inherited an iBook from her niece. However she does not have an Internet Service Provider.

She cannot decide whether to purchase a wireless ethernet router and sign up with a standard UK ISP, or to purchase a mobile dongle.

One UK telecommunications company offers a free internet connection dongle if she signs up to an 18 month contract. The monthly fee is £10/$20, with a download cap of 1GB.

Using my mobile phone supplied by the same company, I have checked the signal strength in her home and it appears full.

She says she is unlikely to use the laptop out of her home and considers it very unlikely that she will be downloading movies or songs.

I am tempted to say go ahead and purchase the dongle. However, I would be interested to know if others have experienced this type of internet connection and whether they would recommend it or not.
