Hi Everybody

I am having some difficulty in working out if i can manually update my ipod.

I was hoping that i could transfer my music from my ibook/itunes to my ipod, but then i want to delete tracks from Itunes whilst keeping the tracks on my ipod.

Does anybody know if this is possible? And if so, how.

Yours hoping!

Chris

Be aware than "synching" iTunes and the iPod is a one-way deal: you can go from iTunes to the iPod, but not the other way to prevent piracy (people taking their iPods to friends' houses and just copying the music to their computer, essentially giving it away). There are utilities that can be found on http://www.versiontracker.com that will enable you to copy music from the iPod back to your hard drive.

IIRC, you can set iTunes to manually sync rather than auto-sync somewhere in the preferences. Try looking through this:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920#faq3

I will take a look at the info you sent regarding manually syncing in itunes.

You see i dont actually want to give my ipod music to anyone, I simply want to free up some space on my ibook hard drive but not delete tracks from my ipod!

Thanks so much again El DiabloConCaca

yes, but you will not be able to get it back on your computer again, keep in mind that the sync works one way only

You will first want to turn off auto-sync in iPod Preferences in iTunes (with your iPod attached to your Mac, select it in the source list, and then click the iPod icon button on the lower right).

Then, in iTunes, manually copy over MP3s from your iTunes library to your iPod. Once the MP3s are copied over, delete them from your iTunes library & delete them off of your Mac. By turning auto-sync off, the next time you connect your iPod to your Mac, it will not try to make your iPod look exactly like your iTunes MP3 library. So, iTunes won't delete the tracks off of your iPod that are no longer on your Mac & no longer in your iTunes library.

Oh, and to Capt. Obvious, there are apps out there to access music files back from your iPod (Podutil is good and free). I manually manage my iPod but every other month or so I copy all my songs from my iPod to my external hard drive in case my iPod is ever stolen or lost.

::love:: Thankyou Randman and Capt. Obvious! And MacOSX for clearing that all up for me!

all is working as i would like.

Cheers
Chris (london)
