iPod name differs on iTunes and itself...

Ok, my iPod is called Foo.

I named it Foo. It says Foo in iTunes.

So, when I go to the 'About' section on my iPod... it says, clear, in 65,000 colour black text :p "Food"

I don't want to be labeled as someone who just thinks about food all day, having an iPod named Food is kind of wrong.

Anyway I can fix this?

EDIT: After some playing around, I've noticed a few things. When I renamed the iPod 'Oscar' it showed this with no problem. However, when I renamed it back to Foo, I got Fooar. As you should notice, this means that the last 2 letters of Oscar were not removed. I tried adding spaces to the end of Foo to over write the 'ar' but it didn't work. I believe this is a bug that could be fixed.

So, the bug would be, when deleting names, the names aren't deleted, unless overwritten with a character other than a space.

Where can I tell Apple this?

It's a pretty funny bug, especially since you first noticed that it had named itself "food". I expect the problem is related to the fact you're using the word "foo" and that this is reacting strangely with a hidden keyword or variable within the software of either the iPod or MacOSX. A common dictionary definition of "Foo" is:

2. [very common] Used very generally as a sample name for absolutely anything, esp. programs and files (esp. scratch files).

Its quite reasonable to wonder if teh developers used the term "Foo" somewhere in their code as a placeholder for the scratch-disk area on the iPod. As a result, whenever you try to name it back to "Foo", the process fails with an unexpected error. I'd be really interested to see if the same thing were to happen if you renamed it to "pod" or something.

My theory is that it just won't remove characters unless they are written over with a character other than Space.

Although, it was named Mo's iPod at first. That's 7 characters (minus the space). So, when I renamed it to Foo (3 characters) it had Food. That is odd.

I would expect it to be Foos iPod. Lol.

It's odd. I did laugh when I realised my iPod was called Food. I have now named it Good Food.

That is strange! However, I don't see how a string object named "Foo" would interfere with any variables or methods used in the program code for the iPod.

That's really weird, and no, I haven't experienced that myself -- my iPod's been named "Icabod" since day 1. If I get the inclination to change the name, I'll try doing what you did: pick a shorter name and see if it truncates the name or not.

It would be brilliant if you could do so, El. It won't take a minute.

My iPod is now called Mo's iPodod. I don't remember the previous name... this is kinda annoying now.

PS: Can any non-iPod Photo users check this out and see if it applies to them as well? In my Bug report I said I had only tried it on the Photo.

I used the iTunes method, and yes! I get the same thing! I went from "Icabod" to "Jeff" and now the name appears on the iPod's "About" setting as "Jeffod".

In iTunes, iSync, and when mounted as a disk, the name appears as "Jeff".

Renaming it back to "Icabod" properly displays the name on the iPod now.

Very strange bug! Nice catch!
