Ipod Not Allowing New Tunes

I have a first generation ipod, 10gb version and for some reason it is not allowing me to add more music to it. It is still showing that 3.7 gb are available. anyone encounter this?

What exactly happens when you try and add music? Error messages? Just won't do it? What version of Mac OS X and what version of iTunes are you using?
 
I'm using itunes 2, OX 10.4.2, and there aren't error messages, just won't move songs from the library to the ipod. I drag them over, and they spring back. thanks,
