iPod range re-shuffle

when did they re-arrange the ipod line?

now it goes:

ipod Shuffle 512MB
ipod Shuffle 1GB
ipod mini 4GB
ipod mini 6GB (new! when?)
ipod 20GB (it's on it's own now - no 40GB)
ipod u2 20GB ( £45 premium)
ipod photo 30GB (new! when?)
ipod Photo 60GB. which is now £300

what happened to the faithful 40GB ipod B+W?

New as of this morning. Rumors predicted that the iPod mini, iPod and iPod photo lines would get a makeover (new models, different mini colors, different price points) today. And they did.

But they were wrong -- no color minis, no iPod photo 40GB, missed the boat completely on the iPod photo 30GB.

Edit: Whoa. And they've really skimped on the accessories that are included with the photo (I didn't check the other models). I got an iPod photo 60GB for Xmas, and it came with both FireWire and USB2 cables, a dock, a protective belt holster and the A/V cable. Seems the new photo models only come with a USB2 cable (FireWire sold separately), no dock, no belt holster, and no A/V cable.

No wonder the price went down $150.

It's probably because the iPod photo wasn't selling - so now if you want a high capacity iPod you have to get the iPod photo. Probably a good move on Apple's part (given the iPod photo's price cut).

But the nice thing is that come March you'll be able to connect your iPod photo directly to your digital camera. That rocks.

it would seem so

it was a travesty they even gave the go ahead on the U2 model anyway - such tasteless whore-mongering. i hate it.

But most accessories don't work with the iPod photo (Bose SoundDock etc etc) so as I see it the only use for an iPod photo is pictures. Maybe they're doing this to try and push the sales of a failing product.

I think that's just a move towards a full color iPod line.

Yeah, I miss direct connection of iPod photo with my 300D camera.

Yeah, I think the front is OK, but the scratches... er, I mean, 'signatures' are tacky. I KNOW it is laser engraved, and therefore has to be a copy of a signature, but any copy of a signature, is tacky, and pointless, IMO.

But, no offense, you'd have to be pretty stupid now, to buy the U2 iPod over the Photo.

Just my opinion.

Why does the front page say "in three new colors" for the mini? Are they slightly different tones of their original hues? Thanks.

Not liking the lack of a 40GB iPod. Not one little bit. It was the right size for me; and I certainly would have bought one next time I'm in the market for an iPod.

The U2 iPod is really a specialty item. It should only have been around for like six months and then withdrawn. Probably less. Make it LIMITED edition. People would have bought them for the resale value.

Now noone will buy those, they didn't fix the problems with the iPod photo that was stopping people buying them; speaking primarily of the lack of portable addition to the Photo library.

So now there's no perfect iPod for me. A 40GB iPod photo might have been good at the news prices.

And the new iPod mini colours are tending toward the new Office 2004 icon colours and look, which scares me. A whole lot.

I agree with the penguin - it totally sucks that the 40 gig iPod
has been phased out and replaced by the 60 gig iPod photo.

I was planning to buy a 40 gig iPod , but that option has been rendered null - so after i buy my iPod mini, i will not be in the market for any future iPods.

*The 4 gig iPod mini is now even more affordable at $199.
( J&R Music has them for $174!)

Looks like i got my 40GB at the right time, lol. Even now the 30GB color is cheaper now

You would think the iPod U2 would have been a temp item, only sold for a few months then discontinued. Cause if anything apple should have discontinued the U2 iPod and replaced the it w/ the 40GB B+W, but oh well. Still kinda sucks, but i had no need for a color screen, lol. ::ha::

I agree with the penguin on all the above too. They especially needed a much more significant fix of the iPod photo.

I'll probably get a 4G gold iPod mini (hopefully stores won't artificially keep the prices on this model up with some lame "rare model" argument).

nobody seems to have mentioned the fact that a mini has been reduced in price by £50, in the UK anyways, before it was £190! thats pretty good value! i have rto admit the iPod range is very good value now. that with the emergence of the mac mini there is no reason as to why the apple machine shouldn't shift the windows out of it's monopoly. granted the 40 gig iPod would be nice........ (question: why didnt they use the 40 gig HD's in the iPhoto??? they must have loads from the years of production of all the others). I believe the stratagy is to open the way for the Quicktime machine to emerge, the iPod Media player will be the next step, FOR I HAVE FORESEEN IT!!

it's like, compromise after compromise now.

Colour screen or 20GB
Colour screen with just 30GB
Colour screen with 60Gb (nice) but £300 and it's *even* heavier. my 40gb weighs *just* too much to be able to put in a pocket. i always use the 'holster'. it's just not quite portable. and the 60gb is even heavier and thicker. just not that desirable.

it needs a big shake up - technology has moved on since 3g ipod (2+1/2 years ago) - there must be smaller 40gb disks now.

Price points on technology can *ONLY* be considered in the here and now. You can not properly value technology over time. You can not factor its resale-ability. You *must* consider it money spent and move on. Prices on technology are *always* dropping and there is *always* a price point for the item you want. The item you want today *WILL* be cheaper tomorrow, but the price you'll pay today will always be roughly the same for a bigger, better, faster of what you want tomorrow.

For instance, to get a serious digi-cam, you're spending $400. 5 years ago, go get the best contenders for the retail dollar you were spending $400. What you get now for that $400 is *WAY* better than 5 years ago. But... it's $400 to get you seriously into the game, regardless. $$2000 - 2500 for a good and well equipped personal computer. $1500 for a good laptop, $2600 for a good desktop-replacing laptop.

There are alternatives at every price point you can think of, but when you look at *the* item you want within a real budget, you'll notice the trend.
