Is the ATI 7000 compatible with the G5?

Yes, it is, if you install it in a PCI slot.

Don't try to replace your stock video card with the 7000 or try to plug the 7000 into the AGP slot. I know this is probably painfully obvious, but I'm just covering all the bases... ;)

bobw, those specs describe the PowerMac G5 perfectly:

1) The G5 in question has PCI-X slots, backwards compatible with both 66MHz and 33MHz regular PCI cards (although, if you do use one regular PCI card, then ALL PCI-X slots will run at the regular PCI speed -- kind of like plugging a USB 1.1 device into a USB 2.0 port).
2) The PowerMac G5 can run OS X 10.2.7/8 and OS X 10.3.x, both of which support the ATi Radeon 7000 PCI Mac edition card.
3) QuickTime is now at 6.5, and fully backward compatible with hardware designed for QuickTime 5.0.
4) OpenGL 1.2.2 is for OS 9, and newer versions of OpenGL ship with Mac OS X.

Why wouldn't the card be compatible? The only compatibility problem I see is that the PowerMac G5 requires that PCI cards be 3.3v and will not accept cards that are 5v. The Radeon 7000 PCI Mac Edition is compliant with the 3.3v PCI specification.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

I'm not replacing the stock card, I'm adding a third monitor.

ElDiabloConCaca,

Where did you read about the 7000 being compatible with the G5? Just wondering.

Thanks again
Dean

Well, I can't tell you where I read that -- but I have read reader reviews concerning the use of the 7000 in a G5, and no problems were reported.

Sorry I can't give you a link, but I'm 100% sure it works with the G5! ATi's site doesn't mention G5 compatibility, but it doesn't mention G5 INcompatibility, either. The 7000's specs indicate that it would be 100% compatible with the G5 (meaning it needs a 33/66MHz PCI slot, which the G5 has, and the G5 requires 3.3v PCI cards, which conforms to the specs of the 7000).

There are no "hardware specific" drivers for the 7000 so whether you put it in a G3, G4 or G5 it still uses the same drivers that come with OS X, and I can confirm that it works with both 10.2 and 10.3.
