Is there is any way to have a jpeg image change on a timed basis?

I'm a novice html programmer and wondered if it is possible to have a jpeg image change on a timed basis, not quite animated but I'd like a series of images, say 10, rotate at one or two second intervals. In addition, ideally I'd like the initial image to be random...a lot to ask I know...or is it?
