Here's the scoop:
1) Mac Powerbook G3 (Mac OS 9.2) with iTunes 3 mounts CD and songs are
easily played and transferred
2) Mac Powerbook G4 (Mac OS 10.3.9) with iTunes 4.9 mounts CD and songs
are easily played and transferred
Sony CD player does not recognize the CD as being in its tray
3) Mac Powerbook G4 (Mac OS 10.3.9) with iTunes 7+ does not mount the CD
(doesn't show up at all) and iTunes doesn't see it as well.

Why is that?

My friend burned the Audio CD under iTunes 7.6 as aiff files.

One the Powerbook G4 lets see if the Mac even sees the drive. In the Finder menu bar click on the blue apple (in the top left corner) and select "About This Mac ...". When the pop-up comes up select "More info...". This will open System Profiler and when it does highlight 'Disk Burning'. Let us know if it sees the drives?

Also is the drive internal or external?

Thank you for your suggestion.
Yes, the system does see the drive in the System Profiler
