Kernel Panic Error During Install/format???

Hi all.
I'm in possession of a mac pro 2x 2.8ghz intel quad core running leopard. I have a main hardrive and a secondary harddrive. I was attempting to reformat the first hd and reinstall leopard. I pop in the cd as I have with many other systems, click the install startup and reboot, after about 4 minutes of waiting I see the black screen drop and it asks me to restart my comp, presumably a kernel panic error. I've done this with two different hd's to rule out it being an hd problem. I've also procured a friend's copy of leopard and the same problem occurs. The system was acquired from a local business that closed recently and sold off it's stuff which is how I came into possession of the system. It has no 3d party hardware that I can see. I find myself wondering if it is a problem with the motherboard and since the system used to be for business purposes perhaps there is some sort of block or lockout on the mobo that's preventing an installation. Any help would be much appreciated.

You can find my other posting on another forum here : http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/app...tml#post871660 and maybe you guys can pickup on something they haven't.

Thanks.

Which Leopard install/restore DVDs are you using? As a general rule of thumb, you cannot install a version of OS X that is earlier than the version of OS X that came pre-installed on the computer.

So, if you have a retail copy of Leopard, say, 10.5.1, and the Mac Pro originally shipped with 10.5.3, then you will not be able to use that Leopard install DVD to install Leopard on the Mac Pro.

You also cannot use the System Software Restore DVD to install OS X that came from a different computer -- e.g., you cannot use a Mac Pro Restore DVD to install Leopard on a MacBook, iMac, or even a different generation Mac Pro machine. Typically, in this situation, you would see a message that said something to the effect of, "You cannot install OS X on this machine," but I suppose a kernel panic is also possible.

It's best to use the System Software Restore DVD that originally shipped with the computer to reinstall OS X.

Where did the Leopard install DVD that you're using come from?

The only copy i am in possession of is the launch date os x 10.5 leopard copy. No discs came with the system, at all. This is a refurbished re-sold system.

out of curiosity what version should a mac pro quad core xeon be shipped with?

ok that program looks pretty assuring. How sure can I be that the version incompatibility is what the issue is? I mean it fits as a problem better than anything else so far.

What is the text of the kernel panic? I believe if the system disk is incompatible then there should be a line saying something similar to "No driver for this platform," although it may not say exactly that, if at all. If it does, though, that's definitely the problem: too early a version of Leopard to install on that computer.

hi fifthmanstandin,

i have the same problem, and same concerns. i'll be sending my machine to my local shop this week to re-install osx 10.5.5. the difference is, i HAVE my original system discs, AND the newer retail version of leopard, but still no dice. what did you end up doing to solve your problem?

thanks,
