Lacie mini hub HD not visible on Mac OS X

Hi All,

I'm really hoping that someone will be able to help me with the following issue:

I bought my Mac OS X and a Lacie 500 gb mini hub hard drive back in 2007 and have had no problems with either until today.

I was attempting to move a quicktime movie (160 MB) from my mac desktop to the Lacie hard drive (which still has about 250 gb of free memory available). The process seemed to be hanging, so I rebooted the mac, and haven't been able to see the Lacie HD since.

The cables and the mini hub seem to be working (light on hub flashes), but it refuses to appear on the desktop.

I've since un-plugged and rebooted everything several times, but with no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to recover the HD, please? I'd be seriously angry if I had to lose all the data I have on there, which includes pictures of my late father.

The 12-month warranty has long gone, and the Lacie.com site doesn't even recognise the serial number of my model when I went there for help!

What can I do?

Any help/suggestions would really be appreciated.

See this link for the model I'm referring to http://www.amazon.com/Lacie-Mini-Hub-500-7200RPM/dp/B000E5CYSM

Thanks,

Annie

Unplug the drive and then Reset Your PRAM to reset the USB ports on your Mac. Then once you plug the hard drive back in see if /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and see if if find the drive and possibility fix the drive. Good Luck.

Satcomer,

Sorry to report that your idea didn't work. I reset the PRAM a couple of times, making sure everything was off/unplugged etc, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. The HD is not showing up at all on the disk utility.

Can you suggest anything else, please?

It might be that the file system on the LaCie mini hub HD is really bad. Have you got a copy of DiskWarrior or DriveGenius 2? Maybe they can find the drive an repair the file system. If that doesn't work either I suggest trying a data recovery application such as Data Rescue II (which has gotten data of bad drives several times for me) to try and get some data of the drive (if needed). If Data Rescue II doesn't find the drive either I'm afraid there's some hardware problem with the drive and/or the rest of the LaCie mini hub. Tryin to open up the case, get out the hard drive and try the hard drive in a known working hard drive case is something I would try. in fact, that's exactly what I want to do since I have a friends LaCie mini hub here that behaves in a similar way! :) Now, how do I get this damn thing open? Don't see any screws anywhere. Of to the rest of the Internet to search for a solution...

Thanks for the advice, Star-affinity, but I'm no good on the "tech" side, so I won't be attempting to open anything with regards to the HD. What I have done was contact Lacie to see if they could assist, they couldn't but recommended a few contacts who may be able to retrieve my data for me.

So fingers crossed, all may not be lost.

Thanks for your help.

To be clear, I am having the same problem. Have you tried the firewire port instead? I got that to work once, then a day later, trying again the disk would not mount.

I don't believe you need data retrieval, you just need to get it into a different case.

Limster, I tried the firewire port without any success.

I appreciate your advice -- re getting a different case, but I'm no tech wiz, so wouldn't even know where to start on that. Fingers crossed the data retrieval service works out.

So many people have problems with Lacie drive bays I say people should just ignore this brand.

I have problems with my LaCie drive too; but only after updating my iMac7,1 to 10.5 Leopard. If it is wired with a Firewirecable and I start up my Mac it will be visible on the desktop. But when I disconnect my LaCie and later on I reconnect the disc again it will not be visible at all. I have to reboot my whole Mac to make it work again. With the USB-connection there is no such problem, but since so many devices use usb I prefer Firewire for my external HD. So to me it seems a OS X related problem because prior to Leopard it worked without any problem...

The Mini-hub had been working fine with OS X for over two years before any problems developed, so I don't know if that's it, but I'll certainly take Satcomer's advice and avoid LaCie drives in the future.
