Leopard: Is it worth it (now)?

I've read alot of bug reports on Leopard and have also looked at an survey of users at a macsite that indicates that almost half have found serious bugs on Leopard. Given this, and assuming that one is okay with Tiger, does it make sense to upgrade to Leopard before Xmas? Or to put it another way, what questions would you ask yourself in deciding to upgrade in 2007 rather than after the second bug-fix release?

Thanks for any ideas.

The central point I'd worry about is whether or not to buy a new system in the next couple months. If you plan on upgrading your system, it doesn't make sense to buy Leopard before '08. If you're happy with Tiger and aren't having any issues, Leopard is merely a luxury.

Leopard is a really nice OS.

Be sure you disable all special features using uncontrolled extensions, old system extensions,.... before you upgrade.

Had I known how many severe and annoying problems I'd have to face, I would never have upgraded. NEVER. I wish I could go back just like that, but to run Time Machine (that didn't work either!), I had to delete my X.4 backup...

BEWARE.

Leopard works fine as long as you're using software that's ready for it. I don't quite get how Adobe et al. were able to ignore the then-upcoming OS for as long as they did and I blame those developers. Really. Apple has done a fine job.

That said: You don't _need_ to upgrade to Leopard. I don't know of much software that is Leopard only. It does have its perks, though, and if you want to use TimeMachine (which works great for me, btw.), there's no way around it, currently.

I just bought a new iMac and being a newbie at Macs I have a question. I run all the CS3 versions of AdobePS, Dreaweaver, and Fireworks. I know I have to get the Mac versions of this Sw but are you saying they will not run with leopard?

For those who are concerned that their software won't run under OS X 10.5 (Leopard), here are several compatibility lists:

Here's my experience.

I installed Leopard on my new Mac Mini by initially installing 10.4.10 (as explicitly instructed by Apple) and then upgraded to Leopard using the install DVD. Big mistake in my opinion. I had no end of problems. The 10.5.1 update did nothing to resolve many issues.

After doing an erase+install using Leopard only everything now runs smoothly (so far). Although I am nervous of using Parental Controls again as that caused a number of Kernal Panics.

Perhaps just a coincidence?

Some non-Apple OS extensions are not yet 100% Leopard compatible. Therefore you should disable these before you upgrade. You can then re-install these one after each other.
