loading type 1 fonts

I have 10.6.3 and i am trying to add Type 1 fonts in to library/fonts folder so they can be accessed by other users. I am also replacing the system helvetica and helvetica neu fonts. I have managed to get the Font book to recognize the fonts, but none of my applications are recognizing them...Please help!

Snow Leopard does not support Type 1 fonts anymore.

it was my understanding that 10.6.3 took care of that?

I am a designer for a company and we have all our catalogs using the the Type 1 fonts.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see anything in that link that says Type 1 fonts were "fixed" with the 10.6.3 update (only a bunch of comments about how people are still having problems with 10.6.3 and font management)... can you point me to where it says that on that page?
