Help. After setting up my machine in Cocktail for "Single User", My machine will not boot to the OSX interface. It has taken me to the root directory and I cannot log in from there. Instead, it is asking me to run "/sbin/fsck -y" and then "/sbin/mount -uw". Since the disk is journaled, fsck will not run. It also tells me that the root device is "local, read-only, journaled". What do I do? I know nothing about Unix and am stuck on this interface. PLEASE HELP!!!! :(

I am now trying to start up from the Panther install disc using the "Option" key on reboot. The machine again boots in "verbose?" mode and again tells me that the "root device is mounted read-only". Stuck again.

You can still run fsck on a journaled drive from single user mode by typing "fsck -fy".

To log-in from there, simply type "exit" and you should be presented with the log-in screen. Log in there and tell Cocktail not to log you into single user mode.

tHANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I did not think of the obvious. Your help is greatly appreciated. I am now up and running in Standard mode. That teaches an old geezer like me never to mess around with my system when it is running so well. :D
