Lost Sidebar?

First, I am new to Mac. I have an EMac I got at a yard sale and have no documentation. It has OSX 10.3.9 and seems to work fine so far, but, I would like to use the Sidebar. TIA.

Maybe you have clicked the small oval widget in the top right corner of your Finder windows. Try clicking on that. That widget toggles between the simple finder window, and the sidebar + menubar addition to and finder window. If you don't see the window change to a toolbar plus a sidebar, then go to your Finder menu preferences. Click on the Sidebar tab, and turn things on there. You should see the sidebar appear on any open finder window.

I don't seem to find an oval widget anywhere on the Finders window. I have turned all items for the Sidebar on in preferences, but, still no sidebar. The only things on the upper right corner are: The internet connect icon, the volume icon and the date and time.

.. the oval won't be in the top left of your screen, but at the top left of the *window* that's open. For example, open a new Finder Window by clicking on the Finder icon in your dock (the "happy face") and look for the oval at the top right in the window that appears.

Thanks, I found the oval at the top right of the open window and clicked to toggle, but, I still do not get all of the items I requested in "Finder Preferences" for the Sidebar. Good start though.

What does happen when you toggle that oval?
Click until you see more details in the upper part of the Window, maybe a few extra widgets/icons. Check in the View menu - you should click on Show menubar (should say 'Hide Menubar')
Do you see a dot along the left edge of the finder window?
Double-click on that and watch what happens.

When I click the oval, it just toggles the sidebar off and on. I do get extra options, show icons, show list and then show list with Date Modified. . There is no option for Menu Bar. There is no dotted line along the left edge of the Finder Window. View does give the option to show/hide toolbar. It also gives the option to customize the toolbar. This great! It gives you info about each item in the Sidebar. Thanks very much.
