Loud G4 PowerPC

I had a new larger Hard Drive put into my G4 PowerPC a year ago. I noticed that the tower seemed louder and assumed this must have something to do with either the new Hard Drive or perhaps the fans.

The noise has slowly being getter louder over time and now it seems deafening (or am I just more conscious of it?). I accept there may be dust on the fans, but could the noise signify something more worrying?

Hmmm... can you run the computer with the side door open for a few moments and see exactly where the noise is coming from?

It's tough to say whether you should be worried about the noise without knowing where it's coming from. It very well may be the hard drive, or it could be, as you said, a buildup of dust on the fans.

What model of G4 is it? I don't remember if any of the later-model G4s had variable-speed fans, but if it's a MDD model, it's a possibility.

It is a G4 Silver. I opened it and there was a little dust only. However, I could not work out what is making the loud "hum noise".

Perhaps the Maxtor HD just sounds loud in any machine. However, my wife commented that the "computer' sound much louder than usual, so I am sure I am not imagining it.

It's quite possible that the hard drive is just louder than your old one... I have a 60GB 7200rpm Western Digital that produces a very audible "whine" noise, making the machine much louder than it was before the drive was installed...
