Low resolution during boot after firmware upgrade

I have a late 2011 model Macbook Pro. I just finished letting it install the latest EFI firmware update, and now after the reboot I get horribly low resolution at the login screen and at the boot selection screen. Has anyone seen this problem before? Here are some pictures: http://imgur.com/a/3PIkE
 
I see an odd resolution reset, so after booting, check in Displays prefs that the resolution is correctly set.
Could just be a one-time remnant of the firmware update, and clears itself after a full shutdown, then start again.
Does that oddness continue after the next restart (after verifying your display is set the way you like) and you boot to your desktop?
 
Thanks for the reply. Sadly rebooting doesn't help. Maybe 1 out of every 5 reboots, the login screen is at normal resolution. Once it fully logs in, the resolution goes back to normal every time. Nothing out of the ordinary in the display preferences. Really strange problem :\
 
Resetting the PRAM did the trick! Thank you.

Could anyone explain what PRAM and NVRAM are? These are unfamiliar to me, I've been a mostly a PC user and tech for many years, so it would be nice to understand what those handle in order to do my own future troubleshooting.

Your MacBook Pro does not have something called NVRAM. That term is only relevant on older (prior to intel processor) Macs.
You would find that PRAM, NVRAM, Power manager resets, etc - are in many ways similar to the BIOS that you would be more familiar with. Apple has never used the term BIOS, but often, the types of settings held in a BIOS can be similar to those on the Mac in the PRAM (Parameter RAM)
