Mac has insomnia

Usually I would use the search function for something like this, but it wasn't working out. My Mac G5 has a problem. The monitor won't shut off and sleep. Usually, It is about 5 or so minutes Idle before my monitor goes to sleep, but last week, it completely stopped working properly, and now will stay on for 24 hours straight if you leave the computer on. It will sleep if you force it to by going to the apple menu and click " sleep" it also makes noises like it's "thinking" (the little clicks and stuff when you open a program) constantly now.

I've checked and re-checked my settings in the display and energy saver controls, i've set them and re set them, nothing seems to work. I ran a disk utilities clean up on it, and that didn't solve the problem, either.

like i said, it's a PowerMac G5, with OSX (the version right before Tiger came out.. i think it's 10.2). Any help would be apprieciated.

it's constantly making "regular access noises" every few seconds.

I've had all the programs you mentioned open, and left it to try to sleep.. then i closed EVERYTHING, and left it to try to sleep. nothing either way. I've rebooted a bunch of times. Not really sure what else to do... i've done some research on this topic and it seems to be a common problem, with just as many G5's not going to sleep as ones that go to sleep and won't wake up.

ok... tried new user acct. Didn't work, does the same thing. Now my fan won't shut off. The casing of the computer is cold, so it is not like it's overheating, but now it sounds like my computer is ready for take off.

what should i do to fix these problems?
