Mac Hd icon not there

I logged on as usual this morning only to find that the mac hd icon was not on my desktop or on any of the finder windows i have made sure that the box is checked in the prefs and a cds icon does appear whats happening and how can i stop it?

Reset your Finder's preferences by going to /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and find the file com.apple.finder.plist and dlete it, then reboot. This should fix it.
