You know given that Mac OSX uses a *nix kernel I don't think one should have to do those steps on a regular basis. This isn't Windows.

Even Apple recommends doing this regularly. I link to a support article in my blog post. Permissions get corrupted - it's a fact of life. :)

From Apple (I quote this in my blog post):

"Permissions Defined

Mac OS X incorporates a subsystem based on a UNIX-style operating system that uses permissions in the file system. Every file and folder on your hard disk has an associated set of permissions that determines who can read, write to, or execute it."

There is no logical reason for permissions to get corrupted unless the system is unstable. I had more than one Linux boxes and more than one Mac and the only time things ever got corrupted was from a power outage or a badly made kernel extension that forces a reboot.

You quote Apple talking about permissions and while that explains that Apple uses permissions, why should they become corrupted?

Read my entire post. You'll also notice in the quote that it's not just UNIX but it: "incorporates a subsystem based on a UNIX-style operating system that uses permissions in the file system".

Permissions, over time, can get corrupted. They just do. It doesn't have much to do with Windows or UNIX, I don't think.

Are you, perchance, leaving Firefox open when the computer sleeps?

If so, try quitting Firefox, then letting the computer go to sleep naturally. When it does, wake it up -- does it still crash/hang?

Repairing permissions can't hurt, and it's not a bad idea (nor really a good idea, either) to repair them too frequently. Permissions can and do get corrupted, but usually only those associated with buggy installers (ahem, Adobe, ahem) or lazy programmers. You usually only need to try and repair them when troubleshooting something you suspect may be related to them.

Well, you've got me on that one. I have to admit that shoddy programming and particularly Adobe will cause problems to get into the system. I don't agree, however, about rebooting on a regular basis. Most of the time logging out like once every few weeks is a good idea though - mostly because of Firefox and its ability to leak memory like a sieve.

I've yet to see permissions repair fix any issue. Permissions repair has nothing to do with any substantial permissions issues which may show up in OSX and mainly pertains to default applications preferences and only for apps that have the associated file installed. Its kind of one of those "don't overlook those easiest thing to try that will only work if its the last thing you tried after trying everything else" sort of things. A safe boot on the other hand has fixed all kinds of weird issues in my personal experience.

I would have to agree with you there, I haven't seen it fix anything yet either. I honestly don't think permissions get fouled up all that often.
